84. LAPLACE (Pierre-Simon de). Exposition du système du mond - Lot 84
84. LAPLACE (Pierre-Simon de). Exposition du système du monde. Paris, Imprimerie du Cercle-Social, an IV (1796). 2 volumes in-8, 314 p., [2] f. ; 312 p., [2] f., brown shagreened basane, smooth spine decorated with cold framing on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges (period binding). First edition with a curious handwritten annotation at the end: Ah Pierre-Simon! Pierre-Simon! Why did you become Simon-Pierre? Pierre-Simon de Laplace (1749-1827) presented a complete vision of the solar system without resorting to mathematical formalism. He synthesizes the advances of 18th-century astronomy and mechanics, including his own contributions to the study of universal gravitation. In particular, he presents his famous nebula hypothesis, proposing that the solar system arose from the contraction and cooling of a cloud of incandescent gas. Binding a little rubbed, with small epidermal marks or small leather chips, pages uniformly scorched. (Houzeau & Lancaster, 8940).
