110 [Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century medicine]. Set of 3 - Lot 110
110 [Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century medicine]. Set of 3 volumes. - SUTTON (Samuel): New method of pumping bad air from vessels &c. Avec une dissertation sur le scorbut par le docteur Mead. Paris, Durand, 1749. In-12, 225 p., 2 folding plates. Contemporary fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red morocco title-piece. Joints partly cracked or split, corners dulled, headpieces damaged. Main body slightly warped. - RIOLAN (Jean). Schola anatomica novis et raris observationibus illustrata. Cui adiuncta est accurata foetus humani historia. Geneva, Joannis Celerii, 1624. In-12, [6] p., 369 p. Bound in 18th-century fawn calf, ornate smooth spine, red morocco title-piece. Binding slightly rubbed, corners dulled. The author of this work is Jean Riolan fils (1580-1657), known as le Jeune, physician and leader of the galenists at the Paris medical school, opposed to the chemists and proponents of William Harvey's blood circulation like his father Jean Riolan, also a physician and author. - STORCK (Antoine). Observations nouvelles sur l'usage de la cigüe. Vienne et Paris, Didot le jeune, 1762. In-12, lxv p., 406 p., illustrated with a large fold-out plate depicting the hemlock. Contemporary binding, marbled fawn calf, decorated spine, worn edges and corners, red morocco title-piece. This is the second part of a work by the same author, published the previous year in Vienna and dealing with experiments and cures using hemlock extract. According to Storck, this much-maligned plant, considered useless and poisonous by many doctors, and fatal by the average person, is the remedy for a large number of so-called incurable diseases. This physician demonstrates the usefulness of its use to cure cancer, venereal disease and blindness, among others. Slightly warped after rapid exposure to humidity.
