135. POPE (Alexandre). Oeuvres complettes. Paris, Vve Duches - Lot 135
135. POPE (Alexandre). Oeuvres complettes. Paris, Vve Duchesne, 1779. 8 vols. in-8, civ, 190 p., [1] f. (souscripteurs) ; vi, 571 p. ; 466 p. ; 468 p. ; 456 p. ; 479 p. ; 472 p. ; 523 p., blond glazed calf with ornate smooth spine, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt edges.
Remarkable edition of Pope's works, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait by Kneller and 17 fine engravings in hors-texte plates by Marillier; very fine illustrations, says Cohen. Beautifully bound copy with fine margins.
Provenance: from the library of Jean Debry (1760-1834), attested by his bookplate engraved with the imperial eagle on the back cover. Jean Debry was a deputy at the Convention, where he voted for the death of Louis XVI, and a member of the Comité de salut public (Public Safety Committee), before coming into contact with Bonaparte and being re-elected to the Cinq-Cents. He cooperated in the Floréal coup d'état and was appointed Prefect of Doubs. During the Hundred Days, he accepted the prefecture of Bas-Rhin from the Emperor, but was dismissed during the Second Restoration and exiled to Mons, where he died.
Bindings lightly rubbed, small section hollowed out on endpapers to remove ownership, marginal traces of ink on 3 leaves of volume one, other minor defects.
(Cohen, 817).
