158. [Voltaire (François Arouet dit)]. Set of 2 works.
- Dictionnaire philosophique portatif. London, 1764. In-12, 272 p. Contemporary brown basane, spine ribbed and decorated, title page. Binding rubbed. Counterfeit published the same year as the original. (Bengesco, I, 1400, for the E.O.)
- Le Huron ou l'ingénu. Lausanne, 1767. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-12, [2] f., 118 p. ; [2] f., 120 p. Contemporary brown basane, spine ribbed and decorated, title page. Binding rubbed, upper spine damaged, corners dulled, one really trimmed. Second edition of L'Ingénu, published the same year as the Geneva original, and for the first time in Paris. It is mentioned in Grimm's correspondence, as Bengesco points out: "A reprint of the novel l'Ingénu has been permitted in Paris [...] It is true that the publicity for l'Ingénu has not lasted long: the priests and their henchmen have cried out, and its publication has just been very severely forbidden [...]. [...] I have been assured that the Paris edition conforms entirely to the Geneva edition, except that in the second part the name Saint-Pouange is in initial letters only, and that the words Manuscrit trouvé dans les papiers du R. P. Quesnel have been removed from the frontispiece.
This work is one of Voltaire's most famous tales, at once satirical and philosophical, set against the backdrop of an impossible love story. (Bengesco, I, 1471)
