203. MONTBAREY (Alexandre-Marie-Léonor de). Mémoires autogra - Lot 203

203. MONTBAREY (Alexandre-Marie-Léonor de). Mémoires autographes de M. Le Prince de Montbarey. Paris, A. Eymery, 1826-1827. 3 vols. in-8, xii, 384 p. ; 404 p. ; 364 p., half-fauwn basane with smooth spine monogrammed L.D. on tail (period binding). First edition of the memoirs of Alexandre-Marie-Léonor de Saint-Mauris, Prince de Montbarrey (1732-1796), who was Lieutenant-General of the Armies and Secretary of State for War from 1777 to 1780 under Louis XVI. Written for himself and not intended for publication, these memoirs are all the more precious for their direct, unambiguous style. An autograph facsimile announced on the title page and absent from the copy. Binding rubbed, some foxing. Also included: MORELLET (André). Mémoires de l'abbé Morellet de l'Académie française sur le XVIIIe siècle et sur la Révolution. Paris, Ladvocat, 1821-1822. 2 vol. in-8, xxxii, 384 p. ; iv, 444 p., 135 p., half eggplant basane with ornate smooth spine. Frontispiece portrait of the author. The unpublished letters, published in 1822 as a sequel to the memoirs, are bound at the end. Lightly rubbed bindings, large halo on first few leaves of Volume I, other minor defects.
