210 [BARNEY (Natalie Clifford)]. Je me souviens. Paris, E. Sansot, 1910. Paperback, 94 pp. uncut.
Rare first edition of this text written in 1904, a prose-poem novel, to win back the lost love of Pauline Tarn, alias the great poet Renée Vivien. It was not published anonymously until 1910, after Renée's death. Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972), a wealthy American, was a legendary poet, author and seductress who proudly displayed her lesbianism and feminist activism. She was a close friend of Colette, Rémy de Gourmont and Pierre Louys. Educated in France, she spoke and wrote fluently in French and published in both languages. She ran one of the most important literary salons in Paris during the Belle Epoque and between the wars, an epicenter of queer and modernist creation.
