223. [Suicide mode d'emploi]. 2 early twentieth-century book - Lot 223
223. [Suicide mode d'emploi]. 2 early twentieth-century books on the subject, to which is attached a book on drugs. Set of 3 books.
- BINET-SANGLE (Dr. Charles). The art of dying. Défense et technique du suicide secondé. Paris, Albin Michel, 1919. In-12 paperback, 154 p. First edition. Published in 1919, this manifesto in favor of voluntary euthanasia, one of the most famous of its kind, caused a scandal. The polemical text is rather crude and may shock, but it argues for the right to choose and describes methods and products. Cover a little soiled, some rare foxing, but a good copy.
- VARIGNY (Dr. Henry de): "Essai sur la mort, la mort et le sentiment" (Essay on death, death and feeling). Paris, Félix Alcan, 1927. in 12 paperback, 348 pages. First edition. Varigny approaches the subject from a philosophical and sociological point of view. He then describes the different ways of dying in great detail, devoting a large part of a chapter to the victims of wild animals. The final chapter is devoted to euthanasia, drawing heavily on the work of Binet-Sanglé, without the author taking a firm stand on the subject. Some brown spots. A good copy.
- LEWIN (Louis), GIDON (Dr. F., trans.). Les paradis artificiels. Paris, Payot, Bibliothèque scientifique, 1928. In-8, paperback, viii, 407 p. Partly uncut. First edition. Opium. Morphine. Cocaine. Peyote. Indian hemp. Agaric. Henbane. Datura. Alcohol. Chloroform. Chloral ether. Veronal. Kawa. Camphor. Betel. Coffee. Tea. Kola. Maté. Tobacco. Arsenic. Table of contents and index at end of book. A fine copy.
