292. [Napoléon Bonaparte]. LAS from François René Jean de Po - Lot 292
292. [Napoléon Bonaparte]. LAS from François René Jean de Pommereul, Major General of the French Revolution, proposing to Jean Debry that he attach the title Italique to the name Bonaparte. Letter dated Paris 21 pluviôse an V (February 10, 1797), 2 pages. François René Jean de Pommereul (1745-1823) writes to Jean Debry: Citoyen, you have done a great deal for the great young captain who, at your suggestion, was awarded the flag he used to secure victory near Arcole. As Mantua yields to our arms and will soon be subdued, they want you to do even more. Propose, citizen, to add to the name of Buonaparte the nickname of d'italique. This reward is worthy of the French people, and will encourage our generals to one day earn the nickname of Briton. Annibal did not do in Italy what Buonaparte did, and Scipio did not surpass him in Africa. Napoleon led the Italian Campaign against Austrian forces and their allies. He scored several significant victories, notably at Lodi and Arcole, cementing his reputation as a brilliant tactician. At this time, negotiations for a peace treaty with Austria were underway. These negotiations culminated in the Treaty of Campo Formio in October 1797, which marked the end of the First Coalition War.
