170 GESLIN (Jules). L'Expédition de la Jeannette au pôle nor - Lot 170
170 GESLIN (Jules). L'Expédition de la Jeannette au pôle nord racontée par tous les membres de l'expédition. Paris, M. Dreyfous, s.d. (1883). 2 vol. in-8, xxiv, 365 p., [1] p. ; 411 p., eggplant half-chagrin with corners, ribbed spine, gilt fillet on spines, gilt head. First French edition based on documents published by the New-York Herald from 1878 to 1882. The text is illustrated with numerous plates. The La Jeannette expedition, led by George W. DeLong, aimed to reach the North Pole by crossing the Arctic Ocean. Caught in the ice, the ship drifted for almost two years before being crushed and sinking in 1881. The crew attempted to reach Siberia by sled and boat, but most, including DeLong, perished in the extreme conditions. Slightly rubbed bindings, handwritten ex-dono on false-title, some foxing and other minor defects.
